New ultra-high ratio zoom lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II for use expressly with Nikon DX-format digital-SLR cameras. A very good lens at a uncostly price : Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras

I've used this lens and its predecessor extensively and I've been happy with both. They are clear, accurate, and focused. You can find a zillion reviews talking about how awesome this lens. I'm going to feature the lens' shortcomings. This is not a be all, end all lens. Don't get me wrong, this is my walkaround lens and it stays on my camera 75% of the time. But it's prominent to know what this lens won't do.

1. Low light. This is a problem that plagues any reasonably priced long-range zoom. If you're going to be doing much shooting indoors, at night, or twilight with this lens, spend in a good ability flash.

2. Bokeh. The majority of the out-of-focus fields look great. However, if you're shooting wide open (low f stop) and there's a lot going on in the background (long grass, trees, etc) some of the finer details can be blurred or occasionally have a weird halo look to them. It's not that big of an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

3. Distortion. Very manageable and hardly noticeable for the most part, but when you shoot things that are obviously supposed to be very right (buildings, roads, etc)at less than about 50mm there is some pincushioning. This is in fact correctable in photoshop.

4. Light falloff. In low-light and long-exposure pictures, you can clearly see some falloff in the corners. Again, hardly a big deal for most photography.

5. Weight. If you're not used to big lenses, this will take some getting used to, especially if you're upgrading from a kit lens.

6. Filters. The 72mm size is getting more popular, but there still aren't nearly as many filters ready as some other sizes. There are resizing rings to compensate if you already have some larger rings, or are eyeballing something in particular.

Ok, this was not meant to turn you off of this lens, only to give you a grounded sense of what this lens has to offer. It is a great walkaround lens for everyday use. It is also a great lens for habitancy looking to get their foot in the door with high ability lenses without having spend too much. This won't replace prime lenses, fast lenses, and superzooms. This is a perfect lens to buy if can only afford, or only want one lens. I would still hate to be without this lens. Very recommended.

uncostly Moderate Wide Angle Zoom for Nikon Dx Digital Slr Cameras : Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

I upgraded to a D200 from my D70 and waited and waited and am still waiting for my 18-200 Vr. I needed a wide angle lens so I listened to Ken Rockwell (I enourage everyone to visit his site) and bought the 18-55. It is a remarkable lens, produces excellent, sharp images, is light weight, and focuses quickly. It's an uncostly build, but for the price I can use for a few years (or until my 18-200 arrives which ever is first) and feel that I have gotten more than my money's worth. Don't let the light weight fool you, though, this is a great lens.

Surprisingly good lens for just over a $100 : Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 Di LD Macro Zoom Lens with Built In Motor for Nikon Digital SLR

The new Di lenses from Tamron are designed to work well with digital cameras, although those with the Di will work for 35mm as well (Di-Ii only work with smaller, Aps-C chip size digital cameras). This is an revising on the fine 70-300 Ld (Low Dispersion glass) design. The major improvements in this lens are in the coatings, to help sacrifice any color bias, and minimize reflections. Additionally, lens manufacturers are doing more inside the barrels to sacrifice reflections.

Like the older Ld design, the new lens has a close-up mode (not strictly "macro") position that allows images 1/2 lifesize on the negative. That's about twice the size of most 300mm zooms lacking this feature.

If you're buying this for one of the new Sony Alpha series, this might be your best bet. The Tamron will consist of a 6-year Usa warranty. It also includes the lens hood. The Sony 75-300 is repackaging of the older Konica-Minolta 75-300 lens, a lens that hit the store before any Km digital Slrs.

Brings Pro-Level doing to buyer Telephoto Zooms : Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED IF AF-S VR Nikkor Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

At long last!!! After a 6 month wait, the lens is ultimately out! I got mine two days ago and have played with it quite a bit. The photos are clear, the vibration discount phenomenal -- I have never been able to take handheld non-blurry photos with any 300 focal distance buyer lens -- and this lens has changed that -- Vr works over the board. It focuses as close as about 5 feet, and infinity at the longer end. The downside -- well, this is a Huge lens -- big, heavy, and wide so it takes up a lot of room in your bag. Second, it has difficulty autofocusing in lowlight situations -- even with Iso cranked up on my D200. This is unquestionably resolved by switching to manual focus and not using autofocus.

The makeup of the lens is virtually identical to that of the 18-200Vr lens -- three switches for Ma/M, Vr on/off, and Vr general or active. Large outer ring for zoom, and smaller ring for focus. That's it. Comes with a nice study book rather than just the fold-out specs sheet so that new users can fast and unquestionably learn how to use the Vr technology on the lens (and when Not to use it). Also has a lens hood and a softcase in the box.

This lens will not furnish the pro caliber shots you get with Nikon's pro lenses in the 300 and 400 focal lengths -- but for day to day users, soccer moms, hockey dads, and other general consumers, you will be surprised at the huge unlikeness that the Vr technology makes in your longer focal distance photos.

Highly recommended.

This is a very good lens given its price. Like with any lens selection there
are compromises, and a more costly lens is not necessarily good in all
respects. These are the main considerations for me:

* The lens comes with an excellent Is. One could probably save a hundred bucks
buying a non-Is lens in this focal range which may even be a bit good optically.
However, long range shots without Is are difficult, especially in low light. The
Is on this lens works very well, good compared to my Canon 28-135 Is and even
compared to the 100-400L. The Is de facto makes a lot of hand held shots possible
that one could not do with a non-Is lens.

* The lens is fairly cheaply built and has a plastic mount. However, the
trade-off is that it is also fairly small and light (the small size is also due
to the fact that it is a Ef-S lens). My other tele-zoom is a 100-400L lens
which is built like tank, but it is also huge and weighs 3 pounds. In many cases
one does not want to carry that much weight around, and that is where this lens
comes in de facto handy.

* Image quality: No, it cannot quite match the 100-400L, but it comes surprisingly
close. Of course, the 100-400L costs 5 times as much. Lack of good color
saturation is the most paramount deficiency. On the other hand images are very sharp.
For outdoors one should get a hood, there is quite a bit of glare in shots with
frontal sunlight.

* Zoom range: the 55-250mm range makes the lens quite versatile. 250mm is long
enough for most outdoor sports, many nature shots, citizen from afar, etc. At the
other end 55mm is still good for close action, for example at a soccer field.
That is approximately a factor 2 shorter compared to 100-(300/400) lenses.
It also provides a nice overlap with walk-around lenses, like the Canon 28-135 Is.

* Aperture: F4-5.6 is nothing to brag about, however, a faster lens would also
have to be much bigger, heavier, and costlier. And as long as you objects don't
move too much the Is makes the lens effectively faster. If Canon's 4 stop
improvement holds it would be equivalent to a non-Isf1-1.4, although F1.4-2 is
probably more realistic. A F1.4-2 with that focal range would have to be big,
heavy, and expensive, if it even existed.

In summary, this is an excellent second lens to complement a short zoom or a
walk-around lens. Very versatile and a lot of bang for the buck. In my case,
even though I own a 100-400L I still keep this lens because it is often more
practical because of the shorter focal distance and the smaller size.
