This compact high-performance telephoto zoom lens incorporates Sigma’s own Optical Stabilizer function. The lens incorporates SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass in the front lens groups and is equipped with an inner focusing system to provide high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The incorporation of HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high-speed auto focus. The OS (Optical Stabilizer) function effectively eliminates the effects of camera shake so subjects can be easily and clearly seen in the viewfinder as well as in the image. It allows the use of shutter speeds up to 4 stops slower than normal for steady, handheld photography. For Sony and Pentax mounts the built-in OS System allows the photographer to see the stabilized image in the viewfinder and can be used as an alternative with cameras having built-in image stabilization. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 43.3inches (110cm) throughout the entire zoom range and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.5. I just bought this lens for my D5000 and it is great! The photo quality, focus speed, and size is comparable with the Nikon 55-200 f/4-5.6 Vr, but for half the price and with a metal mounting plate! Also, its about 1/4 the price of the new Nikon 55-300 f/4.5-5.6 Vr lens which is bigger, heavier, and it focus speed is very, very slow. This lens is a great companion to the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8-4.5 Os Hsm lens, which I have and like as well.
There are fullness of reviews talking about the photo quality of this lens, so I just want to add something different that others have missed talking about, which is the organize of the lens hood. The hood was designed to be a part of the lens and surely used with the lens, not just a afterthought or add-on bonus. It has the same cease of the lens, and it fits perfectly on the lens when in use and when it is backwards for storage. The way the lens is tapered towards the end allows the hood to be stored on the lens and not stick out. This keeps the lens compact when being stored. I have posted a couple pictures to show what I am talking about.
Overall, this is a great lens. Don't let the low price scare you away from buying it, just take benefit of it!
